Earning $75,000 a year in California as a single filer, you take home about $57,952 a year, or $2,229 every two weeks. Federal income tax takes $7,670, Social Security and Medicare $5,738, and California takes $2,665 in income tax and $975 goes to state insurance programs. That is an effective tax rate of 22.7%. At your federal marginal rate of 22%, each extra $100 you earn adds about $61 to your take-home pay.

How it's calculated

We subtract pre-tax 401(k) contributions from your gross pay, apply the 2026 federal standard deduction and tax brackets for your filing status, then add Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% for high earners) and your state's income tax.

State rates, brackets, standard deductions and exemptions are the 2026 figures for all 50 states and DC, plus state payroll deductions such as California SDI. Results are estimates: most city and county taxes, tax credits and other deductions aren't included. Read the full methodology →
