How it's calculated
We subtract pre-tax 401(k) contributions and any health insurance or other pre-tax deductions from your gross pay, apply the 2026 federal standard deduction and tax brackets for your filing status, then add Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% for high earners) and your state's income tax.
State rates, brackets, standard deductions and exemptions are the 2026 figures for all 50 states and DC, plus state disability and paid leave deductions and local income taxes in New York City, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Maryland. Results are estimates: tax credits such as the Child Tax Credit aren't included. Read the full methodology →
